Plantation Shutters–practical and beautiful

Wednesday, August 1st, 2012

Did you know that plantation shutters have their roots in ancient times, and can be considered the ‘oldest’ form of window treatments?  In a time where function was the highest priority, shutters were used to provide ventilation, privacy, and the ability to let the sunlight in.  Back then, of course, there were no electric lights, a/c or fans, so shutters on windows allowed people to control all of these things.

Now, plantation shutters have made great advances, while still providing for these basic functions.  Shutters can be completely customized to fit any window–whether it is arched, angled, or odd-sized.  Shutters are heavy duty and last for many years, and also have the advantage of being easily cleaned.  The smooth wooden vanes just need a dusting every now and then to keep their beautiful look.  And for those windows that are out of reach–shutters can be outfitted with a hidden motor that will tilt the vanes via remote control!!  (That’s right–I said remote control window treatments–how great!!)  These remote control options are a wonderful idea for those 2-story family rooms and foyers!

Shutters add a classic look to any window and come in a variety of styles.  The vanes can be approximately 2 inch, 3 inch, or 4 inches wide, and each size changes the look of the window.  While shutters are a slightly higher price point than blinds, they are a design that will never go out of style, and will last for many years!  In fact, our personal manufacturer offers a lifetime warranty from defects, so you never have to worry about them!

Often, people don’t think about adding a ‘hard’ treatment to a window that already has a decorative soft treatment, but in many cases this will add to the overall design of the window, and give it a complete look.  Many people don’t think about window coverings as multiple layers, but the addition of plantation shutters can finish off the window as well as provide practicality to the space!  As designers, we love to create spaces that are unique and customized, and plantation shutters help us to accomplish that!  Take a look at several windows that have the finished look with both fabric treatments and plantation shutters:

Beautiful multi-layer fabric treatment with shutters on bottom for privacy

Two story living room with shutters and soft treatment

Goblet pleat panels with shutters

Decorative window in teenage girl's bedroom

Treatment in a bathroom gives privacy and beautiful look!

Master Bedroom with simple sheer panels and classic shutters

So if your windows are lacking a little ‘oomph,’ or you have panels already but feel like you’re missing something……call us about coming out to help you complete your look!  Plantation shutters might just be what you need!

Latest Bedroom Re-do!

Thursday, July 7th, 2011

Here is our latest Master Bedroom renovation!!  Unfortunately all of our before pictures turned out very fuzzy, so you will have to use your imaginations (and we will try to work on our photography skills!!)

This wonderful couple already had a suite of quality furniture, so we came in with lots of soft goods, paint and window treatments.  We used golds, reds and greens, with some sumptuous silks and velvets on the bed and windows.   There is also a little detail of crystal trim along the bottom of the window shades that catches the sunlight in the afternoons!!  We also did an inset of gold textured wallcovering in the tray ceiling to help tie the colors together and bring some interest to the ceiling.  A spectacular oil painting over the bed completed the room, and it is a show-stopper!!

Check out our recent kitchen renovation with this same couple over at www.durenephillipsdesigns.com blog!!

Window Treatments aren’t just curtains anymore!

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

That’s right.  Window treatments can be just about anything you can imagine–use a pair of oil paintings to flank a window, or perhaps a decorative ormalu to sit atop the casing.   Or you could use one of these beautiful and creative mirrored cornice boards to finish off that window.  Manufactured right here in High Point, NC these beautiful and one-of-a-kind cornices are handmade to each window’s specifications.  We worked hand in hand with the creators to select each decorative element to create just the right look for our clients.  These pieces certainly make a statement and goes to show you don’t have to just use fabrics at a window!

The mirror can be antiqued or remain crystal clear.  And because these pieces are created to suit every project, we can design anything your heart desires!

Custom Faux Finishing!!

Tuesday, July 6th, 2010

With the economy still struggling, many people are choosing to renovate their current homes instead of buying new ones.  One of the big trends now is to keep existing kitchen layouts and cabinets, and “refinish” the surfaces.  We work with some great artists that can do almost any type of surface!!!   This kitchen transformed from plain white painted cabinetry to a distressed textured finish reminiscent of an old Tuscan home.   Complete with some grasscloth wallcovering and granite countertops, and you have a beautiful new space!!

Customize your home

Monday, May 10th, 2010

We are seeing more and more demand from clients that want to put that “special” touch into their homes–a one-of-a-kind piece of  furniture, a commissioned piece of art, something that can become a family heirloom and be passed down to their children.  Not only do these pieces hold a special place in our designs, they often speak about the family themselves.  We recently completed a job where we brought in an artist to design a piece of leaded glass to become a focal point in the main living area.  The symbolism of the phoenix and the dragon was very special to the family, with special attention to the placement of the creatures, along with the significance of the pearl in the center, according to Chinese culture.  We helped the artist complete the design, then hand selected every glass to be used in the window, with careful consideration of the textures and designs of the glass.  Once completed and installed, this family has a eye-catching centerpiece for their living space, as well as a unique piece of art that can be handed down!!
